The 2027 Scholarship Season Opens Next Month. Here Is the Calendar That Matters.

The application window for the major fully funded international scholarships open to Nigerian and African students begins in August, when the UK government’s Chevening Scholarship opens for the 2027-28 academic cycle, followed by Commonwealth Scholarships in September and Germany’s DAAD from October to January.

The stakes are practical and large. Chevening covers full tuition for a one-year master’s at any UK university, return flights, visa costs and a monthly stipend of roughly 1,300 to 1,500 pounds, and has funded about 1,500 Nigerians since 1983. It requires a bachelor’s degree, at least two years of work experience and a commitment to return home for two years, and its global acceptance rate sits around two per cent. Commonwealth Scholarships, targeted at citizens of Commonwealth countries with strong development-impact cases, cover tuition, airfare and a stipend for master’s and PhD study.

Beyond the flagship pair, deadlines already published for 2026-27 include the Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships (14 January), the Islamic Development Bank programme (31 January), Wageningen University’s Africa Scholarship Programme (1 February) and the Joint Japan/World Bank programme (27 February). Nigeria’s own PTDF Overseas Scholarship, covering the UK, Europe and China, typically opens between January and March. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program remains the most comprehensive package for under-represented African students, covering tuition, accommodation, meals, equipment and flights.

The counsel this publication would add, learned from the application trenches: generic essays fail. Chevening selects for leadership and a credible return-home plan, Commonwealth for development impact, DAAD for academic rigour with a development angle. Referees at African universities need six to eight weeks, and transcript processing at many institutions takes a month. The candidates who win in 2027 start assembling documents now, in July.

What to watch: Chevening’s official opening date in August for the 2027-28 cycle, and any changes to UK dependant-visa rules, which materially affect the calculus for mid-career applicants.
